What is Whiplash?
Whiplash usually occurs when the head and neck are unexpectedly or suddenly thrown very quickly in one direction and then rebound in the opposite direction. You might say the head is “whipped” forward and backwards. In an automobile rear-end injury the first thing that occurs is the body is thrown forwards but the head is thrown backwards and the neck is hyperextended. A whiplash can also result from the sudden stopping of a car where the body remains fairly in place but the head and neck are thrown forwards into hyperflexion.
An individual who has been in an accident should first make sure that there are no life threatening emergencies. Once that has been ruled out, since any kind of accident or trauma often causes spinal subluxations (a misalignment of the vertebrae which “pinches” or interferes with the nerves), and since most medical doctors are not trained to locate or correct subluxations, the individual would be well advised to have a chiropractic examination. No amount of painkillers, muscle relaxers or physical therapy can re-align the vertebrae and relieve the nervous system and skeletal system from pressure. What is needed is a chiropractic adjustment to realign the spinal column safely and easily.
How Whiplash Occurs
